9 Creepy Things About One of New Orleans' Most Haunted Houses

It seems as though seeking out a haunted house to buy is all the rage these days. Whether it’s a lavish estate in Britain, or an East Coast mansion formerly occupied by two eccentric sisters, the listings for these properties are often more fun than the houses themselves. At the very least, reading through each post is a more affordable experience.

One listing that recently caught our eye focuses on a handsome New Orleans home that dates back to 1867. It's known as the Griffin House, and its market price is listed as $1,285,000. Alas, it seems the property has sold since Realtor.com first published their article. Hopefully, the new owner knows of the Griffin House's spooky past; it’s considered one of the most haunted houses in the Big Easy. Here are some of our favorite creepy facts about this pricey piece of history.

Author Troy Taylor, in his book Haunted New Orleans: History & Hauntings of the Crescent City, lists the Griffin House as one of the most haunted houses in the city. Considering New Orleans' thoroughly haunted reputation, that's a pretty scary fact in and of itself.

The home dates back to 1867 and is said to have been used as a jail during the Civil War.

So the story goes, two deserters of the Civil War were held captive at the Griffin House while awaiting a death sentence. Rather than be killed by the executioner, the captives took it upon themselves to shoot each other.

Guests of the home are usually reluctant to sleep in the attic bedroom, and for good reason. This is where the two soldiers allegedly died.

It’s said that the soldiers' murder/suicide was so gruesome their blood leaked from the attic and down the walls into the main rooms.

The home was later used as a perfume factory, and then a mattress factory. While not entirely creepy at face value, it's still somehow unsettling.

The home is located at 1447 Constance Street which is within five miles of five different historic cemeteries. Of the neighboring graveyards is St. Louis Cemetery No.1, which is thought to be the most haunted cemetery in the state.

Realtor.com listed the price to own this home as $1,285,000. We can probably all agree, this is the scariest thing about the property.
