Hop on your big wheel and get ready to return to the haunted halls of the Overlook Hotel. Doctor Sleep, the film adaptation of Stephen King’s book of the same name, is set to hit theaters this November—and the first official trailer just dropped.
Published in 2013, Doctor Sleep is Stephen King’s sequel to his classic 1977 horror novel, The Shining. Adapting the tale is horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan (Hush). Needless to say, we're dead-excited about the pairing. And if the trailer is any indication, we're in for one mind-bending ride.
Doctor Sleep picks up several decades after The Shining left off. Ewan McGregor stars as the adult Dan Torrance, who struggles with his repressed psychic abilities. When Dan meets teenager Abra (Kyliegh Curran), a fellow psychic, he realizes that she’s in terrible danger. A cult known as the True Knot preys upon young psychics like Abra, and they're set on co-opting her essence. Dan must do everything in his power to prevent Abra from being kidnapped and brutalized by a savage clan.

All the while, the trailer hints that Dan struggles with the trauma of his childhood, represented by flashbacks to the events first witnessed in Stanley Kubrick's, The Shining . A recovering alcoholic, Dan also strives to avoid repeating his father’s mistakes—but the eerily familiar sight of his face peering through a fractured door casts doubt on his success.

Doctor Sleep was written and directed by Mike Flanagan, who’s no stranger to both the horror genre and the tricky art of adapting books for the screen. Flanagan directed such chilling films as Oculus, Ouija 2: Origin of Evil, and the Netflix horror hit Hush. He's also the mastermind behind Gerald's Game, adapted from Stephen King's novel of the same name, and The Haunting of Hill House, the Netflix horror series based on Shirley Jackson’s novel of the same name.
