Summertime is great and all, but sometimes you just want to chill—literally. And while maxing out your AC is one way to go, it never hurts to get a little creative.
From the depths of space to acres of dense woods, horror films are here to give you all the spine-tingling chills. Here are nine terrifying new horror movies coming out in summer 2024
In A Violent Nature — May 2024
An immersive, ambient slasher finds a vengeful spirit resurrected when a group of teens takes a locket from an old, collapsed fire tower. The dead corpse (Ry Barrett) wants his locket back and kills anyone who stands in his way.
In a Violent Nature premiered at Sundance earlier this year to critics raving about the atmospheric beauty woven with horrifying gore.
The Exorcism — June 2024
When the star of an upcoming horror film is mysteriously killed, actor Anthony Miller (Russell Crowe) is brought on to replace him. But playing a priest brings up traumatic memories, and Miller soon begins acting erratically on set.
It might be his past troubles coming back to haunt him. Or it might be something far more sinister lurking in the background.
This film is currently playing in theaters and will eventually be available to rent on Amazon Prime.
A Quiet Place: Day One — June 2024
The third movie in the series takes viewers back to day one.
Samira (Lupita Nyong’o), Eric (Joseph Quinn), and other New York City residents band together after an alien attack. They learn quickly that they have to remain absolutely silent if they want to survive.
The Watchers — June 2024
Move over M. Night Shyamalan, there’s a new horror director in town.
Written and directed by Ishana Night Shymalan, The Watchers follows a twenty-eight-year-old artist (Dakota Fanning) as she gets stranded in an isolated forest in Ireland. But the dense landscape holds more than trees.
Something is watching. Desperate for shelter, she finds herself trapped with strangers as mysterious creatures stalk them.
MaXXXine — July 2024
With a clever but subtle nod in the title, the third film in the X series focuses on the events directly after X. After surviving the massacre at her last film set, Maxine is more determined than ever to be an actress.
But making it in 1980s Hollywood isn’t easy. Especially when a killer known as Night Stalker has decided that she’s his target.
Alien: Romulus —August 2024
The seventh installment in the Alien franchise takes place in between the events of the first two movies.
Starring Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu as a young crew who, while scavenging a space station, come across a terrifying and violent life form.
Cuckoo — August 2024
So far, Cuckoo promises to be one of the most promising and disturbing horror movies of the summer. Seventeen-year-old Gretchen (Hunter Schafer) has to move away from America and live with her father’s new family in the German Alps.
But she’s quickly haunted by strange noises and disturbing visions, all leading to a shocking secret about her family.
Trap — August 2024
In true M. Night Shyamalan form, we don’t know a lot about this upcoming psychological horror film.
It stars Josh Hartnett as a father who takes his daughter (Ariel Donahue) to pop star Lady Raven’s (Saleka Shyamalan) concert. But this father has secrets. He’s also the serial killer known only as The Butcher.
And this entire show might be an elaborate trap to try and catch him.
They Listen — August 2024
If we know little about M. Night Shyamalan’s newest, we know even less about Chris Weitz’s upcoming horror film.
There’s the creepy all-red movie poster with nothing but the title and a glob of…paint? Or is it cream?
But we trust Weitz, Jason Blum, and Andrew Miano—along with the talented cast—to deliver something that truly terrifies.
