When we think of video games, our minds usually jump to action players like Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, or World of Warcraft

In each, players use a controller to guide avatars through a virtual landscape. Recently, however, a new breed of gaming has emerged.

Augmented reality (AR) games employ real-time technology to alter a live view of the world around us,  blurring the line between gameplay and reality. We saw this, most recently, with Pokémon GO; the mega-hit had players everywhere spotting Charmanders and Squirtles on their way to work.

But what about an augmented reality that taps into our darkest fears? Night Terrors: The Beginning does just that.

Night Terrors, made by Novum Analytics, is an immersive and addictive augmented reality survival horror game that transforms your surroundings into a veritable house of horrors. Since its release, the game has become the top entertainment app in over thirty-three countries in the Apple App Store. The creepy AR experience combines terrifying photorealistic graphics, alarming sounds, and interacts with your phone’s flashlight and vibration capabilities to mess with your ears, eyes, and mind. According to Novum, gameplay should take place "at home, after dark, with the lights off and your headphones on."

Currently, Night Terrors: The Beginning is only available on iOS—though its creators are considering the release of an Android version.
