In 1977, Dario Argento’s horror film Suspiria was released. The lurid giallo flick became a cult classic and remains one of Argento’s most beloved technicolor nightmares. Ten years ago, news of a Suspiria remake rippled through the horror community, eliciting nervous excitement. Then the project slipped into pre-production purgatory, leaving the possibility of its release in serious doubt.
Today, however, brings bloody good news: Suspiria will officially hit theaters this fall, and we have our first chilling trailer.
Director Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name) has called this new version a reboot, rather than a remake, promising to put his own stamp on the work. And the first trailer, with its cool, gray palette, makes it clear that Guadagnino is true to his word. Starring Tilda Swinton and Dakota Johnson, Suspiria will once again follow a young dancer’s journey to a European academy where her body and mind encounter sinister forces.
Johnson, who starred in Guadagnino’s 2015 film A Bigger Splash, will take on the role of Susie Bannion. Jessica Harper, the original Susie, will also appear in the film. Swinton, who starred alongside Johnson in A Bigger Splash, plays Madame Blanc, the terrifying dance instructor.
Early clips of the film were shown at CinemaCon, and critics were stunned—terms like 'sick', 'disturbing', and 'beyond extreme' were used to describe the intense and terrifying body horror. The trailer, released today, manages to create a truly unsettling experience without a single word. Scored by Thom Yorke and featuring a healthy dose of maggots, creepy dancers, cryptic diary pages, and a girl on the run, we’re ready to squirm our way through what looks to be a terrifying and utterly distressing movie.
