Ted Bundy Speaks in the Trailer for 'Conversations with a Killer'

Ted Bundy, often labeled the “American Jack the Ripper”, is arguably the most notorious serial killer this side of the pond. 30 years after his execution by electric chair, the fascination with this charming sociopath continues. On January 24, Netflix will release Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes. The trailer promises to deliver where other movies and documentaries have fallen short, by incorporating intimate interviews with the murderer himself to provide a glimpse of his twisted mind.

Ted Bundy confessed to the rape and murder of 30 young women during the 1970s. Charismatic and handsome, he gained his victims’ trust by feigning injury or impersonating authority figures. His sadistic urge to control his victims didn’t end with death: he often returned to the scenes of his crimes to engage in necrophilia with the remains of the women he had bludgeoned or strangled.

The trailer released by Netflix addresses part of Bundy’s enduring legacy: his ability to live a double life as a normal, trustworthy man and a deranged killer. In fact, Bundy evaded arrest numerous times because his polite demeanor put investigators at ease. As one young woman interviewed outside the courtroom put it, “He just doesn’t look like the type to kill somebody.”

Perhaps even more chilling is the audio clip from Bundy himself: “I’m not an animal, and I’m not crazy, I don’t have a split personality. I mean I’m just a normal individual.” The photos of dozens of his victims rapidly splashed on screen is a harsh reminder that he was anything but.

This isn’t the first time Bundy and his crimes have made it on screen: The Deliberate Stranger (1986) was lauded for its portrayal of the killer, and Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile is set to release this year, with Zac Efron playing the role of Bundy. However, these plot-driven movies can’t hold a candle to Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes in terms of accuracy. After all, the best person to tell Bundy’s story is...Ted Bundy. The documentary uses never-before-seen interviews, footage, and audio of the serial killer musing about his life and crimes, revealing his disturbed mind from his own perspective.
