What makes for a good shoe these days? A Comfortable fit? Sure. General style? Yeah. Affordability? If you're into that sort of thing. What about a drop of blood infused in an air pocket of the shoe that will, most assuredly, cause your home and, perhaps, your very soul to become haunted as all hell? In the case of these new Satan Shoes, a collaboration between the Brooklyn company MSCHF and the rapper Lil Nas X, that level of fashionable spooky is worth $1,018.
The shoes, limited to a run of only 666 pairs (naturally) went up for sale at 11AM EST Monday, March 29, 2021, and have been the talk of the sneakerverse since they were announced over the weekend. The design of the shoe is a refab of a Nike Air Max 97, featuring a bronze pentagram, and Luke 10:18 printed along the toe. Didn't go to Sunday school? Me neither. That particular passage from the Bible states: "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven." The air pocket of the shoe, signature of this particular style of Nike, features a drop of blood from a mixture supplied from six people in the MSCHF staff, mixed in with red ink. The New York Times reached out to MSCHF to inquire as to how the blood was drawn and co-founder Daniel Greenberg said that they just did it themselves.

Greenberg made sure to also mention, in all announcements pertaining to the Satan Shoes, that Nike was not involved in the collaboration in any way, which may cause some problems down the line. In a statement from Nike, obtained from The New York Times, they made their feelings clear saying “We do not have a relationship with Little Nas X or MSCHF. Nike did not design or release these shoes, and we do not endorse them.”
The shoes were announced shortly after the release of Lil Nas X's video for “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)." Give the video a watch below and then see if there are any pairs of Satan Shoes left to buy. Don't hold your breath though.
